The author studies the horocyclic flow on compact quotients of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\). A key geometric property of this flow is expressed in terms of shearing of transverse arcs. The main result of the paper is a set of estimates for the equidistribution of arbitrary sheared arcs. As an application, the author gives an alternative proof of a theorem of \textit{M. Ratner} [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 7, 267--288 (1987; Zbl 0623.22008)] giving quantitative mixing estimates for the horocyclic flow.
