Assume \(H\) is the (infinite dimensional) Heisenberg algebra with a parameter \(t\) (i.e. if \(c\) and \(e_ n\), \(n\neq 0\), are the generators of \(H\) then \([e_ m,e_ n]=m(1-t^{| m|})^{-1} d_{m+n,0}\cdot c\), \([e_ m,c]=0)\). The author considers vertex operators related to \(H\). Their components form an (associative) algebra \(A\) similar to the Clifford algebra. In the present paper the author finds a representation of \(A\) identical with the symmetric functions over \(\mathbb{Q}(t)\). A new proof of the orthogonality of the Hall-Littlewood functions is obtained using the above representation.
