The author has shown that an operator S with dense, invariant domain D in a Hilbert space H is of semi-definite type [that is, \(\sum^{n}_{i=0}\sum^{n}_{j=0}<S^ jx_ i| S^ ix_ j>\geq 0\) for all \(n=0,1,2,..\). and for all vectors \(x_ 0,x_ 1,...,x_ n\in D]\) if and only if there is a Hilbert space \({\mathcal F}\) containing H, and a formally normal operator N in \({\mathcal F}(\| Nx\| =\| N^*x\|\), \(\forall x\in D)\) such that the domain of N contains D and \(Sx=Nx\) for all \(x\in D\); and then if A(S)\(\cap D\) is dense in H, where A(S) denotes the space of all analytic vectors for S, then \(\bar N\) is normal. He has extended the above results to the algebra generated by a finite number of operators with dense, invariant domain D, and applied these results to representations of the canonical commutation relations.
