The paper is dedicated to the study of statistical discrimination between non-normal populations, more precisely, between elliptical normal mixtures. In this case, the linear discrimination function is proven to be optimal. Some techniques for the evaluation of the probabilities of correct classification and examples involving Pearson type VII and generalized Laplace distributions are provided.
