This paper is an attempt to explain the notion of ``morphological filtering''. It starts with the idea of set oriented morphological opening and then introduces envelopes that lead naturally, to iterative algorithms for designing morphological filters. Convolution-based linear filters are compared to morphological filters in many ways. The work is finalized with a discussion of the optimality issue and optimization possibilities for morphological filters.
