    For a class of nonlinearly elastic materials more general than the isotropic one (so-called co-axial materials), it is shown that new inequalities which are strengthened forms of the celebrated Baker- Ericksen inequalities (for isotropic materials) are implied by the condition of strong ellipticity. But these new inequalities also imply the condition of strong ellipticity for certain special states of strain. Then a discussion of the application of these strengthened Baker-Ericksen inequalities is given to the semi-invertibility problem for stress and strain formulated by \textit{C. Truesdell} and \textit{H. Moon} [J. Elasticity 5, 183-189 (1975; Zbl 0324.73003)], to the stability of states of hydrostatic pressure as considered by \textit{E. Varley} and \textit{A. Day} [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 22, 253-269 (1966)], and to the problem of determining the strain produced by a simple tension.
