    Let \(V\) be a positive continuous function on \(\mathbb{R}^N\) such that \(\liminf_{|x|\to \infty } V(x)>\inf V(x)>0\). Suppose moreover that there is a bounded open set \(\Omega \) such that \(\inf_{x\in \Omega }V(x)<\min_{x\in \partial \Omega }V(x)\). It is shown that there are \(\epsilon^*, \beta^* >0\) such that for all \(\epsilon \in (0,\epsilon^*)\), \(\beta \in (0,\beta^*)\) there is a positive solution of the equation \(-\Delta u+V(\epsilon x)u =H(u-\beta )u^p\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\). Here \(H\) is the Heaviside function.
