The authors study existence of ground state solutions to variational problems of the type \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta u+\big(V(x)-W(x)\big)u=f(x,u)\quad \text{in}\;\mathbb{R}^N,\\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N),\quad N\geq 2. \end{cases} \] Here \(V,W:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}\) and \(f:\mathbb{R}^N\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) are continuous functions verifying heavy technical assumptions and the \(u\)-growth of \(f\) is critical. Moreover, the problem is supposed to be asymptotically periodic, that means, \(V\) is \(\mathbb{Z}^N\)-periodic, \(\lim_{|x|\to\infty}W(x)=0\) and \(f\) is asymptotically periodic in \(x.\) The machinery involved relies on standard variational methods.
