A countable group G of automorphisms of a Lebesgue space (X,\(\mu)\) is called approximable if there is an automorphism T of (X,\(\mu)\) whose trajectories coincide with the trajectories of G. Associated with an action of G on (X,\(\mu)\) there is an action of G on \((X\times R,\mu \times \lambda)\) (\(\lambda\) Lebesgue measure on R) defined by \(\tilde g(x,u)=(gx,u+\log \frac{dg^{-1}\mu}{d\mu}(x)).\) If G is of type III (no invariant measure equivalent to \(\mu)\) then this new action is approximable if the original action was approximable. It is the purpose of this note to prove that the converse implication holds when the action of G is ergodic and of type \(III_ s\), \(0\leq s<1\), and for a class of actions of type \(III_ 1\).
