Fix a prime \(p\). The author gives the maximal \(p\)-defect of a nonprincipal \(p\)-block of a finite group \(G\) in terms of group-theoretic properties of \(G\). For \(p\) odd \(B_ 0(p)\) is the only \(p\)-block if and only if all normal nilpotent subgroups lie in \(O_ p(G)\) and there are no normal perfect subgroups which are their center extended by a simple group or are central products of such. Thus for \(p\) odd all nonsolvable simple groups have a nonprincipal 2-block. This is also the case for \(p=2\) except for \(M_{22}\) and \(M_{24}\). The author uses the classification of finite simple groups for this and for his list of finite simple groups where nonprincipal \(p\)-blocks are of defect 0.
