Let X be a Banach space, \(X^*\) its conjugate, M a subset of X (or \(X^*)\) and \(P_ M\) the metric projection on M. The author shows that under some supplementary hypotheses on X (reflexivity, uniform smoothness, etc.), the w- (respectively \(w^*)\) sequential upper (or lower) semicontinuity of \(P_ M\) implies that the set M is compact. In \(L_ p(S,\Sigma,\mu)\) the upper (lower) semicontinuity of \(P_ M\) implies that M is a singleton and in \(\ell_ p(S)\), \(P_ M\) is w- sequential upper semi-continuous if and only if M is compact. These are the converses of some previous results of the author [ibid. 22, 345-356 (1977; Zbl 0358.46009), ibid. 24, 649-660 (1978; Zbl 0402.41013), ibid. 28, 821-832 (1980; Zbl 0454.46022)].
