Let \(G\) be a connected reductive linear algebraic group. The aim of this note is to settle a question of J.-P. Serre concerning the behavior of his notion of \(G\)-complete reducibility under separable field extensions. Part of the proof relies on the recently established Tits center conjecture for the spherical building of the reductive group \(G\) [the authors, C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 347, No. 7-8, 353-356 (2009; Zbl 1223.20041)].
