Let \(D\) be a domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\). The author gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a subdomain \(D_ 1\subset D\) to have the relative BMO extension property; i.e., that every \(f\in\text{BMO}(D_ 1)\) is a restriction of a function in \(\text{BMO}(D)\). Here BMO is the standard space of functions of bounded mean oscillation. The method is a modification of the one used by \textit{P. W. Jones} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 29, 41-66 (1980; Zbl 0432.42017)] who proved the theorem for \(D=\mathbb{R}^ n\).
