The authors show that some examples of constants of motion in nonholonomic systems, which previously appeared in a ``mysterious'' way, can be related to the underlying symmetry group and the constraints in a gauge-like way. Many examples are given: the nonholonomic free particle, the rolling disc, the tippe top and the ball in a cylinder.
