While it has been known for some time [\textit{L. W. Small}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 75, 147-148 (1969; Zbl 0185.092)] that a one-sided noetherian ring could not always be embedded in an artinian ring, many classes of (two- sided) noetherian rings admit such embeddings, particularly those whose factor rings all have primary decomposition. These include universal enveloping algebras of finite dimensional solvable Lie algebras. Since factors of nonsolvable Lie algebras do not always satisfy primary decomposition, the example of U(\({\mathfrak sl}(2,{\mathbb{C}}))\) which established this fact was an obvious candidate to test embeddability, and the authors show that a certain factor ring of this algebra can indeed not be embedded in an artinian ring.
