The paper is concerned with the existence of weak solutions of the equation \[ \Delta^2 u-\Delta u +V(x)u = u^p,\quad u>0,\quad u\in H^2(\mathbb{R}^N), \] where \(2 < p < 2N/(N-4)\), \(N\ge5\). The existence of a ground state is obtained under certain assumptions on the potential \(V:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}\). For constant \(V\) the proof proceeds by minimizing the associated functional on the Nehari manifold. For nonconstant \(V\) the authors consider the problem with \(V\) replaced by \(\delta V\) and use the monotonicity trick to obtain a solution for \(\delta = 1\) from solutions for \(\delta<1\).
