    The family of cubes \[ Q_{j,k}=\{x:2^ j-k\in [0,1]^ d\},\quad j\in {\mathbb{Z}},\quad k\in {\mathbb{Z}}^ d, \] in \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) is denoted by \({\mathbb{Q}}\). A function b which is bounded on \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) together with its inverse is said to be pseudoaccretive if there exists a positive constant \(\delta_ 0\) such that \(| m_ Qb| \geq \delta_ 0\) for any \(Q\in {\mathbb{Q}},\) where \(m_ Qb\) is the mean of b over Q. The authors introduce a family of functions \((\theta_ Q),\quad Q\in {\mathbb{Q}},\) called r-regular b-vaguelettes which is a set of functions satisfying \[ | \theta_ Q(x)| \leq C_{\eta}2^{dj/2}w_{\eta}(2^ jx-k), \] \[ | \theta_ Q(x)-\theta_ Q(x')| \leq C_{\eta}2^{(r+d/2)j}| x-x'|^ r(w_{\eta}(2^ jx- k)+w_{\eta}(2^ jx'-k)), \] \[ \int_{{\mathbb{R}}^ d}b(x)\theta_ Q(x)dx=0 \] for \(Q=Q_{j,k}\) and \(\eta >0\), where \(r\in]0,1[\) and \(w_{\eta}(x)=(1+| x|)^{-d-\eta}\). The main theorem is that for any pseudoaccretive function b there exist an \(r\in]0,1[,\) a finite set \(\Lambda\) of cardinality \(2^ d-1\) and, for any \(\lambda \in \Lambda,\) two families \((\theta_{\lambda,Q})\) and (\({\tilde \theta}{}_{\lambda,Q})\) of r-regular b-vaguelettes such that \((\theta_{\lambda,Q})\) and (\({\tilde \theta}{}_{\lambda,Q})\) are two unconditional bases of \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ d)\) and biorthogonal with respect to the sesquilinear form \[ B(f,g)=\int_{{\mathbb{R}}^ d}f(x)b(x)g(x)dx, \] and any function \(f\in L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ d)\) has an expansion \[ f=\sum_{\lambda}\sum_{Q}B(f,\theta_{\lambda,Q}){\tilde \theta}_{\lambda,Q}=\sum_{\lambda}\sum_{Q}B\overline{({\tilde \theta}_{\lambda,Q},f)}\theta_{\lambda,Q}. \] With the aid of this theorem the authors give a simple proof of `Théorème T(b)' of G. David, J. L. Journé and S. Semmes. Applications to the study of Hardy spaces and potentials of double layer on Lipschitz surfaces are also given.
