The main result of this paper is that a closed smooth 4-manifold \(M\) which has a handlebody decomposition with no 1-handles and at most one 3-handle admits a singular torus fibration over the 2-sphere, which is smooth except at at most one point of \(M\). In addition, if \(M\) is not a homotopy 4-sphere there is such a fibration in which the general fibre represents a nontrivial class in \(H_2(M;Z)\). The paper concludes with a new example of a singular torus fibration of \(S^4\) over \(S^2\).
