Simplifying the two-dimensional Maxwell equations to the wave equation posed in a finite domain, the authors use Bérenger's perfectly matched layers to get the solution to the initial-boundary value problem in a rectangle containing the original domain but excluding reflections on the artificial boundaries. Contrary to what has been known until now they are able to show the well posedness of the four problems arising around one corner of the rectangle - without loss of derivatives. Their result for the Bérenger algorithm is valid for two absorption coefficients which are Heaviside functions (or smooth) and for the divergence free solutions of Maxwell equations, and the partial solutions are perfectly matched.
