The author proves the following theorem which has been announced in [J. Number Theory 39, No. 1, 91-103 (1991; Zbl 0732.11032)]. Suppose that \(a_ 1\), \(a_ 2\), \(a_ 3\) are positive integers which satisfy \(a_ 3\neq 2a_ 2\), \(a_ 3\neq 2a_ 1\), and \(a_ 3\neq a_ 1+a_ 2\), then there exist three integers \(k_ 1\), \(k_ 2\), \(k_ 3\), such that \[ a_ i k_ j-a_ j k_ i\leq (5/8)a_ j-(3/8)a_ i,\quad i=1,2,3, \] except that \((a_ 1,a_ 2,a_ 3)\) satisfies a certain set of numbers.
