The paper is a biography of Thomas Bayes (1701?--1761). It includes both information on his life, family background and education as well as his scientific and theological work. In contrast to some biographies of Bayes it is an attempt to cover areas beyond Bayes' scientific life. It contains new information about him. The paper contains an extensive bibliography. It is supplemented by four comments written by A. Dale, A.W.F. Edwards, D.V. Lindley and S.M. Stigler as well as by a rejoinder by D. Bellhouse.
