This is one of a series of articles in the same issue of the Journal describing aspects of the work of Géza Freud (1922-1979). The author refers to five of Freud's papers giving succinct summaries of their important place in constructive function theory. These include results on the degree of approximation of a continuous function on [0,1] by algebraic polynomials of degree n, the use of intermediate approximation in obtaining quantitative estimates for approximation by a sequence of positive linear operators on C(I), work on one-sided approximation and joint work with V. Popov on spline approximation.
