The aim of this paper is to prove local well-posedness of strong solutions to a new nonlinearly dispersive wave equation for a large class of initial data, to show that global smooth solutions exist and to get a blow up criterion and a sharp estimate from below of the existence time for the strong solutions. The local well-posedness for the equation we concerned is obtained applying Kato's semigroup approach. The local well-posedness results for the Camassa-Holm equation are special cases of the main result in this paper. The existence of global smooth solutions is analyzed by looking at smooth solitary wave solution.
