The authors consider parameter identification problems involving a finite number of unknown parameters in partial differential equations which are written in a weak form. Reformulating the inverse problem into a constrained optimization problem the authors discretize it by conforming finite elements on a regular mesh and then obtain an a posteriori estimate for the error in the parameters. The purpose of this estimate is to guide an adaptive mesh refinement algorithm. Furthermore, the estimator is used to assess the accuracy of the computed parameters. Several examples illustrating the behavior of an adaptive mesh refinement algorithm based on the error estimator are discussed.
