For a complex quasi-projective variety \(X\), let \(S^nX\) denote the \(n\)-fold symmetric product of \(X\), that is, the quotient of the usual product \(X^n\) by the action of the symmetric group \(\Sigma_n\). The main result says that for any bounded complex of mixed Hodge modules \(M\) on \(X\), the symmetric product complex \(S^nM\) can be defined as an object of the same type such that we get a canonical isomorphism of graded mixed Hodge structures \[ H^*(S^nX,S^nM)=(\bigotimes^nH^*(X,M))^{\Sigma_n}. \] In particular, this yields formulas for the mixed Hodge numbers of \(S^nX\) and, in the case \(X\) is proper and \(S^nX\) even dimensional, for the signature of \(S^nX\), extending results by Macdonald, Hirzebruch and Zagier.
