For the results of Koebe and Hardy-Littlewood pointwise bounds for the derivatives of conformal and analytic functions are essential. For quasiconformal mappings such pointwise bounds are usually meaningless. In this paper these pointwise bounds are replaced by the mean value of log \(J_ f\) where \(J_ f\) is the Jacobian of a K-quasiconformal mapping \(f: D\to D'\), D and D' are domains in \(R^ n\), \(n\geq 2\). Let \(a_ f(x)=\exp ((1/n)(\log J_ f)_{B(x)})\) where \(B=B(x)\) is the open ball with center x and radius equal to the distance d(x,\(\partial D)\) from x to \(\partial D\) and \[ (\log J_ f)_{B(x)}=(1/m(B))\int_{B}\log J_ fdm. \] If \(n=2\) and if f is conformal in D, then \(a_ f(x)=| f'(x)|\) because log \(J_ f\) is harmonic. The main results are: (a) (quasiconformal analogue of Koebe's result) There is a constant \(c=c(n,K)\) such that \[ d(f(x),\partial D')/(cd(x,\partial D))\psi \leq cd(f(x),\partial D')/d(x,\partial D) \] for all \(x\in D\). (b) (quasiconformal analogue of the result of Hardy and Littlewood) Suppose that D is a uniform domain and that \(0<\alpha \leq 1\), \(m\geq 0\). If \(a_ f(x)\leq md(x,\partial D)^{\alpha -1},\) then \(| f(x_ 1)-f(x_ 2)| \leq cm(| x_ 1-x_ 2| +d(x_ 1,\partial D))^{\alpha}\) where c depends on K, n, \(\alpha\) and the uniformity constants of D. For the result (b) in the case of analytic functions see [\textit{F. W. Gehring} and \textit{O. Martio}: Complex variables 2, 67-78 (1983; reviewed above)]. The proofs are based on an interesting distortion lemma for the function \(B\mapsto (\log J_ f)_ B\), see the paper [Injectivity, the BMO norm and the universal Teichmüller space (to appear)] by the same authors.
