Let \(G\) be a countable Abelian group such that \(G/\mathbb Z^d\) is a locally finite group. The author constructs a rank-one group action of \(G\) so that the \(\mathbb Z\)-subaction is 2-simple, 2-mixing and commutes only with other transformations of the action of \(G\). This construction is applied to a transformation with square roots of all orders but no infinite square root chain, to a transformation with countably many nonisomorphic square roots, and to a simple map with no prime factors originally constructed by \textit{A. del Junco} [Isr. J. Math. 104, 301--320 (1998; Zbl 0915.28011)].
