The thermomechanical field and the constitutive equations of magnetic fluids are formulated based on the principle of virtual power and the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The thermodynamical framework is used as a constraint, and a classical theory of viscous, heat-conducting magnetic fluid motion is presented where the dynamics of magnetization and deeper details of the microstructure of the fluid can later be introduced.
