The issue of canonical forms plays an important role in linear systems theory. For state-space systems, there are different canonical forms, depending on the type of transformations, such as similarity, feedback and output injection. For the class of implicit descriptor systems, there exists canonical forms under state feedback and state derivative feedback and under the more general transformation group of state, state derivative and output feedback, output injection, and change of bases of the input and output spaces. The aim of the paper is to present a canonical form for implicit descriptor systems under restricted system equivalence, i.e. coordinate transformations on the state and equation spaces. It is shown that the canonical form is directly related to the echolon form of the autoregressive matrix inducing the external behavior of the system. The proposed canonical form is a generalization of the Popov form, and is also valid for singular systems under transfer equivalence.
