The author considers the operator \(L_\mu: f\to \int \frac{f(x)-f(y)}{x-y}d\mu (y)\). This operator is closed and densely defined on \(L^2(\mu)\) if \(\mu\) is compactly supported with an \(L^3\) density, and he shows that the operator \(Q=pL_\mu -qL_\mu\) has polynomial eigenfunctions if and only if \(\mu\) is a free Meixner distribution. He provides a characterization of the semicircular distribution as being the only measure \(\mu\) for which \(Q\) has orthogonal polynomial eigenfunctions.
