Let \(B(\ell^ 2)\) denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators on \(\ell^ 2\). Let \(H=(h_{nk})\) be the lower triangular infinite matrix given by \[ h_{nk}=\left( \begin{matrix} n\\ k\end{matrix} \right)\Delta^{n- k}\mu_ k \] where \(\mu =\{\mu_ n\}\) is a sequence of real or complex numbers. Let T denote the collection of all those \(\mu\) which are totally monotone. We write \(\sqrt{\mu}=\{\sqrt{\mu_ n}\}\). In this note, the author establishes that if \(H_{\mu}\in B(\ell^ 2)\) with \(\mu\), \(\sqrt{\mu}\in T\), then \(H_{\mu}\) has a square root and \(\| H\sqrt{\mu}\| =\| H_{\mu}\|^{1/2}\). Furthermore, \(H_{\mu}\) has a p-th root for every positive integer p which is a power of 2, provided \(H_{\mu}\in B(\ell^ 2)\) and \(\mu\in Q\), where \(Q=\{\mu \in T:\{\mu_ n/\mu_{n+1}\}\in T\}\).
