A book on analysis by da Cunha (1744-1787) was published posthumously in 1790. In his article ``J. A. da Cunha et les fondements de l'analyse infinitésimale'', Rev. Hist. Sci. 26, 3-22 (1973; Zbl 0274.01021) \textit{A. P. Yushkevich} drew upon the French translation of 1811 to praise but also criticise da Cunha's conception of the convergence of series. The author of this paper uses the original Portuguese text to show that the logical error involved was due to the French mistranslator, rather than to the original compatriot author.
