The author considers graphs in closed, orientable surfaces and associated links in their thickenings. He uses knot theory to prove a duality relation for the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial, and he gives an application to knot theory by showing that the genus of the smallest surface containing a link projection can be recovered from its HOMFLY polynomial.
