This book presents a broad collection of statistical data obtained from various situations. It will be useful for research workers in statistics developing new statistical techniques to try their methods on the data sets. The usefulness is justified, as the authors have noted in the preface, in view of the fact that textbook examples tend to be small and are selected primarily to illustrate a particular technique. On the other hand, simulated data may not be representative of real data. The collection of data sets is divided in two parts. The first part contains data sets which have been used frequently to demonstrate statistical techniques, while the second part contains situations showing the complexity and variety of issues facing statisticians. The data sets cover areas, such as the natural soil variation, heart transplantation, intervals between coal-minimg disasters, sunspots, rainfall, stream flow, spread of plants and animals, population growth, unemployment, insurance and community organization, etc.
