This article is devoted to the analysis of anisotropic problems in the context of structured linear systems, generating functions and their level curves. This point of view allows the development of multilevel methods also for systems where anisotropy occurs in arbitrary directions and not only along coordinate axes. Generating functions are used as a tool in the development of the corresponding methods. The emphasize is put on the use of sophisticated smoothing techniques which can be combined with standard coarsening as well as semicoarsening. Numerical results are given to illustrate and compare the different multilevel methods. Some applications that are subject of future research are outlined.
