Let \((X,d)\) be a metric space, and \(f:X\to X\) be a homeomorphism of \(X\). The following is the main result in this paper. Theorem. Suppose that there exist two continuous nonnegative functions \(V\) and \(W\), defined in a closed neighborhood of the diagonal of \(X\), such that \ \(V(p,p)=W(p,p)=0\), for each \(p\in X\), and as much as nine mild conditions (too technical to be stated here) on \(V\) and \(W\) are satisfied. Then, \(f\) has the finite shadowing property on \(X\). An application of this result is given to the topological stability of homeomorphisms with non-hyperbolic behavior. Further aspects involving the obtained facts are also discussed.
