This paper is concerned with a general approach to the construction and numerical analysis of stable methods solving semi-infinite convex problems which are ill-posed. The conceptual algorithm is based on the so-called PROX-regularization [see e.g. \textit{R. T. Rockafellar}, SIAM J. Control Optimization 14, 877-898 (1976; Zbl 0358.90053)]. Applications of the method to elliptic variational inequalities in combination with the finite element method are considered. Serious difficulties arise from the weak smoothness of the solutions of variational inequalities. The application of the algorithm is discussed for the Signorini problem, for the isotropic variant of contact problems in the elasticity theory and for the obstacle problem.
