It is known that the spectral theory of linear operators in Hilbert spaces is the most important tool in the foundation of quantum mechanics. Such a mathematical foundation leads to a more profound insight into the nature of quantum theories. The present book provides a concise and comprehensible intoroduction to the spectral theory of selfadjoint operators in infinite-dimensional Hilbert space from the beginning as well as their applications in quantum dynamics. Moreover, in the book it is given an overview of many of the basic functional analysis aspects of quantum theory, from its physical principles to the mathematical methods. Lots of examples and exercises illustrating the concepts are presented. Some examples are simple and are meant to reduce the effort of beginning graduate students to learn the subject of spectral theory and its relation to quantum mechanics. Note that exercises present different levels of difficulties and many of them are related to missing details in proofs and examples. The reader is assumed to have had some contact with functional analysis and, in applications to differential operators, with rudiments of distribution theory. The contents of the book: 1 Linear Operators and Spectra; 2 Adjoint Operator; 3 Fourier Transform and Free Hamiltonian; 4 Operators via Sesquilinear Forms; 5 Unitary Evolution Groups; 6 Kato-Rellich Theorem; 7 Boundary Triples and Self-Adjointness; 8 Spectral Theorem; 9 Applications of the Spectral Theorem; 10 Convergence of Self-Adjoint Operators; 11 Spectral Decomposition I; 12 Spectral Decomposition II; 13 Spectrum and Quantum Dynamics; 14 Some Quantum Relations; Bibliography.
