An element \(a\) of an effect algebra is called an atom (pseudo-atom, resp.) of a function \(m\) on this effect algebra if \(m(a) \neq 0\) and, for every \(b \leq a\), \(m(b) = 0\) or \(m(a \ominus b) = 0\) (\(m(b) = m(a)\), resp.). The authors present examples and properties of (pseudo-) atoms for special types of functions (e.g., null-additive). They study variations (total, positive, negative) of functions on effect algebras and show that a modular measure of bounded variation on a D-lattice is (pseudo-) atomic iff its total variation is (pseudo-) atomic. A Jordan-type decomposition theorem is presented.
