The author proves the conjecture of \textit{R. E. Hartwig} and \textit{M. Neumann} [ibid. 184, 103-122 (1993; Zbl 0790.15016)] that the index of primitivity of a nonnegative matrix \(A\) is at most \((m- 1)^ 2+ 1\), where \(m\) is the degree of the minimum polynomial of \(A\).
