The authors consider the features of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem which are relevant for a question concerning the foundations of physics that was raised already in the year 1966 by Chirikov and his group, along the Fermi original motivation. The question is whether the results obtained on the FPU problem shed some new light on the relations between classical and quantum mechanics, perhaps along the lines of the ``classical program'' envisaged by Einstein.
