The author [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 105, No. 4, 889-893 (1989; Zbl 0681.28001)] has previously generalized a result of \textit{D. Borwein} and \textit{S. Z. Ditor} [Can. Math. Bull. 21, 497-498 (1978; Zbl 0404.28001)]\ concerning the function \(f(x,y)=x+y\) to a general class of 2-place functions. In the present paper he obtains a further extension of part (2) of their result to any function \(f: \mathbb{R}^ n\times \mathbb{R}^ n\to \mathbb{R}^ n\) satisfying \(f(x,e)=x\) and certain other conditions, so as to conclude that there exists a sequence \((e_ k)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) converging to \(e\), and a set \(A\subset \mathbb{R}^ n\) with \(m(A)>0\), such that for all \(x\in \mathbb{R}^ n\), \(f(x,e_ k)\not\in A\) for infinitely many \(k\). This extension of the result of Borwein and Ditor is applicable, in particular, to matrix multiplication. A proof of an extension of part (1) of their result is also sketched.
