Consider a topological dynamical system \((X,\mathcal{T})\) consisting of a compact metric space \(X\) and a continuous \(\mathbb{Z}^d\)-action \(\mathcal{T}\) on \(X\), where \(d \geq 1\). The authors introduce and study the notion of topological slow entropy \(h^S_{\mathrm{top}}(\mathcal{T},Z)\) for \(Z \subset X\) arbitrary and the notion of measure-theoretic slow entropy \(\underline{h}^S_{\mu}(\mathcal{T})\) for \(\mu \in \mathcal{M}(X)\) arbitrary, where \(\mathcal{M}(X)\) denotes the set of all Borel probability measures on \(X\). Their main result is the following variational principle: for any non-empty compact subset \(K\) of \(X\), \[ h^S_{\mathrm{top}}(\mathcal{T},K) = \sup\{\underline{h}^S_{\mu}(\mathcal{T}) : \mu \in \mathcal{M}(X), \mu(K) = 1\}. \] Moreover, examples of topological slow entropy of certain symbolic systems are given.
