The paper generalizes to 3 dimensions the theory of the perfectly matched layer medium. This technique has been described by the author in a previous paper for 2 dimensions [J. Comput. Phys. 114, No. 2, 185-200 (1994; Zbl 0814.65129)]. The perfectly matched layer is a new technique of free-space simulation developed for solving unbounded problems with the finite difference time-domain method. Numerical experiments are presented.
