Let \((X,d)\) be a separable metric space. A fuzzy compactum in \(X\) is an upper semicontinuous function \(f: A\to[0,1]\) such that \(A\) is a nonempty compact subset in \(X\) and \(\{x \in A : f (x) > 0\}\) is dense in \(A\). Let \(\mathbb{K}(X)\) denote the set of all fuzzy compacta in \(X\). The authors prove that if \(X\) is compact then the space \(\mathbb{K}(X)\) is homeomorphic to the separable Hilbert space \(\ell ^2\) if and only if \(X\) is a non-degenerate Peano continuum.
