A method to exponentiate a unitary representation of the Lie algebra \(L\) of a Lie group \(G\) is described for the case when the action of \(L\) is controlled by suitable commutator estimates. It is shown that in the presence of such a commutator a projective unitary representation of the Lie algebra of a connected or simply connected Lie group \(G\) exponentiates to \(G\). The method does not use the exponential map of \(G\) and applies both to finite and infinite-dimensional Lie groups. The proofs of Goodman and Wallach's results on the integration of positive energy representations of loop groups are obtained as corollaries. The Nelson's criterion for the exponentiation of unitary representations of finite-dimensional Lie algebras is also proved as a particular case of the method developed in the paper.
