The motion of relativistic strings in the Minkowski space \(\mathbb R^{1+n}\) governed by \(n\) nonlinear partial differential equations of second order is studied. The main results are: (1) obtain a general solution formula in parametric form; (2) prove that the smooth solutions are generalized time-periodic provided that the initial data is periodic with respect to spatial parameter; (3) determine the general solution formula for finite relativistic string; (4) show that the Born-Infeld equation is a special case of the motion of relativistic string in the Minkowski space \(\mathbb R^{1+2}\). It is suggested that other problems like Hamiltonian structure, Lax pairs, higher order symmetries, etc. are fundamental, important and open for studying in the future.
