The paper is a new presentation of the results of asymptotic integration theory for \(f''+P(z)f=0\), where \(P(z)\) is a polynomial. The motivation for writing this paper was the desire of the authors ``to make this theory more understandable and accessible by giving complete explanations of the reasoning used to prove the theory and by writing full and clear statements of the results''. The presentation and explanation of the material in the paper is significantly different from that adopted in \textit{E. Hille}'s book [Lectures on ordinary differential equations. Reading, Mass.-Menlo Par, Calif.-London-Don Mills, Ontario: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company 1969. (1969; Zbl 0179.40301)].
