The Riemann problem for a \(2\times 2\) system of conservation laws with a cubic flux function is studied. The system is not strictly hyperbolic. Some numerical schemes, which are accurate for strictly hyperbolic systems, are considered. They give different results for the considered problem. These results are explained, and their implications for similar systems arising in continuum mechanics are commented.
