The author investigates the initial value problem for an integro- differential equation of Volterra type in a Banach space \(E\): (1) \(u' = f(t,u, \int^ t_ 0 k(t,s) u(s)ds)\), \(t \in [0,a]\), where \(u_ 0 \in E\), \(f \in C ([0,a] \times E \times E;E)\), \(k \in C(D;R_ +)\), \(D\{(t,s) \in [0,a] \times [0,a] : t \geq s\}\), \(R_ + = [0,\infty)\). After establishing a comparison result he obtains the existence of minimal and maximal solutions for (1) by means of lower and upper solutions and the monotone iterative technique. An example of an infinite system of scalar integro-differential equations of Volterra type is given.
